Push-Me Pull-You Coffee Table

We have a tradition in our family of giving hand-crafted gifts on Christmas eve. As a result I'm always needing a good idea. One year my daughter requested a coffee table. The only requirements were the size, that it had a shelf to store stuff, and that it had drawers accessible from both sides. Thus the Push-Me Pull-You coffee table was born.

I had a little more cherry left over from the cabinet Matt and I made one Christmas. It had such beautiful character I thought it would make a great top. Unfortunately while I had enough shorter pieces for the bottom shelf and sides, I was one board short on the top. Still the board I found wasn't a bad match and it looked great after it was built.

The drawer fronts are all book-matched shop-sawn veneers from the same board. Once again they remind me of their lightning struck heritage. To eliminate the chance of sticky drawers, the drawer sides are made with quartersawn sycamore (a favorite of mine for drawers). The drawers are constructed with hand cut dovetails.
